Michele Chiapperino's Archive
Michele Chiapperino has always crafted his etchings with the wisdom and slow pace of traditional craftsmen. Armed with a burin and a love of his craft, the artist employs centuries-old engraving techniques used by the great masters of the past. Each stage of the process, both ancient and complex, is carefully calibrated to achieve the desired result. The plates, first polished to a mirror finish, then waxed and engraved, are subjected to nitric acid to produce the final print. Shading and gradation of color can then be achieved with the help of tree resin: blown with special bellows, the resin transforms into a cloud of powder that is slowly deposited on the plate, thus helping to shape the aquatint.
Each copy, signed and numbered, is hand-watercolorized by the artist. That's why, even though they appear identical, in reality, like snowflakes, no two are alike.
